Pet Care Packaging Redesigns That Consumers Loved

From dog treats to cat litter, see how five pet product packaging designs earned stronger consumer preference.

As the only provider of syndicated package design data, Designalytics evaluates the top-selling and fastest-growing designs across hundreds of consumer-packaged-goods categories. We measure and analyze a wide range of design performance areas, including visibility, communication, mental availability, element-level diagnostics, and more.

Consumers want the best for their pets… and they want to get the best value possible.  In this roundup, we feature five pet brands that utilized stronger communication, more engaging imagery, and clearer benefits to win over pet owners and their furry friends.

Jinx Dog Treats

A more colorful palette and enhanced imagery helped consumers visualize the treats’ size, color, and texture of Jinx’s treats. Images of individual pieces of real chicken reinforced the use of quality ingredients, while the more prominent “Made in the USA” callout communicated a benefit consumers found important. Together, these changes helped 76% of consumers choose the new design, with one noting that the packaging “makes it easy to understand that the dog treats are made using real ingredients and clearly shows the treats, so I know what to expect before making a purchase.”

Dr. Elsey's Cat Litter

Consumers were clearly drawn to the new Dr. Elsey’s cat litter packaging, as 67% chose it over the prior design. Many appreciated the larger image of the “adorable” cat, while the more prominent logo made the brand “big enough to see clearly.” The redesign also listed product benefits in high-contrast black text on a white background, making the information “very easy to quickly scan and read.”

Milk-Bone Dog Treats

The small-yet-meaningful changes Milk Bone made to its packaging resonated with consumers, with 66% selecting the new design. The redesign highlights “15% protein” and makes its dental health and bone support benefits more prominent. The additional information “makes the product feel like a higher-quality and  more trustworthy choice,” according to one consumer, while another added, “the more benefits a product has to help my dog, the better.” The pack also features a more proportional image of the dog, which some consumers preferred over the close-up image on the previous design.

Temptations Cat Treats

It looks like Temptations may be tempting more cat owners to purchase its product after its latest redesign. The new look not only highlights ingredients in a helpful way (“made with real chicken”), it tells a clear story of how the product is used. By adding the word “lickable” and showing an illustrated cat reaching for the more-visible product, the brand is “clearly showing how the product is to be used.” The bolder count callout further clarified what’s inside the box. These changes worked together to earn a 65% consumer preference for the redesign, with one consumer summing it up well: “It’s easy to understand what the product is and what to expect.”

Purina Beneful’s redesign put freshness front and center, using typography and color to emphasize the “freshly prepared meals” and “steam-cooked” callouts. Consumers responded positively, with one saying, “freshly prepared and steam-cooked sounds like real, minimally processed food.” They also appreciated the addition of a happy dog, which made the product “feel like something my dog would enjoy.” All told, 60% of consumers preferred the new packaging over the previous design.
